Inizialmente ero titubante rispetto al progetto della ASUS, ovviamente ciascuno ha le proprie esigenze, ed un computer tutto indirizzato alla connettività-economicità-portatitilità può risultare un po' limitato per chi lo vorrebbe usare come computer principale. Ma dopo un bel po' di riflessioni e di smadonnamenti, visto che in fase di tesi un computer trasportabile è di certo più problematico di uno davvero portatile, ho deciso di prenderne uno. Complice ovviamente il prezzo ridotto 300 euro tutto incluso.
Senza entrare troppo nel dettaglio, visto che molti lo hanno fatto meglio di come lo farei io, basti sapere che ho la versione 701, quella cioè con schermo da 7 pollici e 4 giga di SSD interna. La Ram l'ho aumentata a 2 giga.
Abituati a parlare di computer sempre più sofisticati in grado di contenere dati per svariati gigabyte o tetrabyte... Un sub-notebook senza lettore cd, e con soli 4 giga di disco interno può lasciare perplessi. Eppure usandolo da qualche giorno per me è diventato la metafora della decrescita applicata alla tecnologia: meno è bene, e a lungo andare fa vivere meglio.
Non ho comunque iniziato questo post per vomitare le mie riflessioni, piuttosto perchè credo che questo progetto possa essere un'occasione davvero utile a liberarci da una serie di frame mentali. Innanzitutto per liberarci da Microsoft. L'eeePC infatti è fornito con una distribuzione linux, Xandros, davvero intuitiva e completa, sebbene possa essere limitante per gli utenti che vorrebbero poter gestire di più il proprio computer e, perchè no, sfruttare l'opportunità per conoscere il mondo Linux, sperimentando e misurandosi con l'evoluzione del mondo OpenSource.
Cambiare sistema operativo può essere traumatico, ma se fatto con lo spirito giusto può essere assolutamente formativo e stimolante.
Questo post nasce per dare una mano a quanti vorrebbero tentare di andare oltre il sistema integrato, senza tuttavia perderne le caratteristiche e i dati.
L'esigenza può anche nascere dal fatto che la SSD interna, è integrata nella scheda madre, quindi è insostituibile. Questa impossibilità della sostituzione è stata per me da subito fonte di angoscia. Che fare dunque?
La svolta avviene per mezzo delle 3 entrate USB e del lettore integrato di schede SDHC (quelle di molte macchine fotografiche).
E' infatti possibile montare un altro sistema operativo direttamente in una SD e fare il boot (avvio) direttamente da quella.
Di sistemi operativi tra cui scegliere ce ne sono fin troppi... Anche verisoni light di windows.. Ma che io non prendo minimamente in considerazione per quanto detto sopra.
Alla fine ho scelto il sistema xUbuntu, che unisce alle funzionalità di Ubuntu altre, tra cui quelle della gestione desktop di Xfce4.
Il sistema operativo (io ho installato la versione 7.04) è scaricabile e avviabile da penna usb o liveCd (se si dispone di un lettore CD esterno e collegabile all'eeePC (per scaricare e preparare i supporti si faccia riferimento a questa guida).
Una volta che si è fatta partire la versione Live del sistema operativo, che vi permette anche di provarlo senz ainstallarlo, se si decide di installare su un dispositivo diverso dalla SSD interna, serve a questo punto procurarsi un supporto esterno. Io ho usato una scheda SDHC da 8 giga.
L'obiettivo è avviare l'eeePC direttamente da scheda esterna, perfettamente autosufficiente.
Ho trovato in particolare due guide on line per arrivare a questo risultato, entrambe però contengono degli errori, o per lo meno io non riuscivo a fare nulla seguendole punto per punto. Quindi questa guida è quella che ho usato io, sintetizzando le due (una di eeeccolo, pubblicata sul forum di eeeuser.com, l'altra invece di Giorgio Beretta, pubblicata su catania.linux).
Oltre al sistema operativo, installeremo sulla scheda anche il GRUB, che serve all'avvio per scegliere da cosa partire. Questa è la cosa cui bisogna stare più attenti.
Il primo passo è fare click su INSTALL, icona che si vede sul desktop di xUbuntu avviato da CD o USB.
Si risponda alle domande su lingua e orario, per poi passare al menu di scelta del dispositivo di installazione.
State dunque attenti a scegliere quello esterno. Se avete dei dubbi, da terminale usate il comando " fdisk -l ", vi darà l'elenco dei dischi montati e potrete così vedere se la vostra sd è monata come SDB o che so io.
Una volta scelta la destinazione si avvia il menu di partizionamento. Tenete presente che viste le ridotte dimensioni dello schermo, alcune opzioni potrebbero essere non visibili, quindi per trascinare le finestre, cliccate non sulla barra in alto, ma nel corpo stesso della finetra, tenendo premuto "alt".
Nel menun di partizionamento scegliete "manuale". Eliminate le partizioni eventualmente esistenti e createne una nuova con fyle sistem EXT2 e root (inserite lo slash " \ " nell'apposita riga).
Non badate ai messaggi di errore (mi pare siano due o tre). E andate avanti.
A questo punto c'è la parte da non dimenticare. Nella scheda riassuntiva dell'installazione infatti si possono visualizzare le opzioni avanzate (se non lo vedete alt-click-trascina), cliccateci e verificate che l'installazione di GRUB avvenga su disco esterno, se nella riga dice " (hd0) " sostituite con " (hd1) ".
Poi su avanti e fate andare l'installazione. A installazione terminata NON RIAVVIATEEEE!!!
Inizia ora la parte della configurazione, quella un po' più complessa, se non altro in termini di concentrazione.
Aprire una finestra del terminale (applicazioni - accessori - terminale);
1- Inserire ” sudo mkdir /mnt/ubuntu ”
2- Inserire ” sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/ubuntu ”
3- Inserire ” sudo mount -tproc /proc /mnt/ubuntu/proc ”
4- Inserire ” sudo chroot /mnt/ubuntu ”
5- Inserire ” su ”
6- Inserire ” nano /etc/initramfs-tools/modules ” per aprire con nano il file ed aggiungere alla fine del testo quanto segue:
“ehci-hcd” -enter-
“usb-storage” -enter-
“scsi_mod” -enter-
“sd_mod” -enter-
Poi, per chiudere e salvare premere -ctrl- + -x- e per confermare -s- o -y-; ciò è necessario per far supportare al SO l’hdd esterno nel boot.
7 - Inserire ” nano /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf ” e all’inizio del file inserire “WAIT=5″ -enter- poi per chiudere e salvare premere -ctrl- + -x- e per confermare -S- o -Y-; questo serve per dare tempo al computer di montare l’HDD esterno al boot (il numero 5 può essere variato a piacimento)
8 - inserire " mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22(usare la TAB completion per il nome esatto) /lib/modules/2.6.22(usare la TAB completion per il nome esatto) e dopo -enter- , lasciare eseguire fino a che non torna la linea di comando; considerate che nella mia installazione il primo -tab- dava luogo ad un dubbio, scegliete il file senza estensione; mentre nel secondo, scegliete quello che finisce con “ / ”.
9 - Inserire ” nano /boot/grub/menu.lst ” e scorrere fino alla fine del file; sostituire tutti i valori (hd1,0) con (hd0,0) e i valori (hd0,0) con (hd1,0), poi per chiudere e salvare premere -ctrl- + -x- e per confermare -s- o -y- ,
10 - A questo punto riavviate il computer
Mentre parte la schermata grigia tenete premuto il tasto
Mi pare sia tutto... Spero di essere stato chiaro e che nesusno abbia troppi problemi.

allora premetto che io pure di linux ci capisco poco e niente, l'unica cosa che ho capito con certezza è che in qualche modo non si è mai soli, anche perchè le esigenze "tue" fanno la "curiosità mia"... E quindi fanno cnoscenza.
Intanto ad esempio per il problema dello schermo, in xUbuntu nel menu applications, la prima voce è "gestore delle impostazioni di Xfce". Lo apri e cliccando sull'icona del "salvaschermo" trovi le opzioni del savescreen e del "power management" (in basso accanto al pulsante close - se non lo vedi ricordati di trascinare la finestra in alto tenendo premuto il tasto alt).
Per l'installazione ferma al 4%... boh...
Mi vengono in mente 2000 cose... e quindi nessuna, se usi un lettore cd esterno, ad esempio le vibrazioni possono creare un problema di questo tipo... (a me è successo più volte ed ho risolto mettendo una scatola vuota sotto il lettore)... Oppure mi viene in mente la possibilità di aver usato una scheda mal partizionata... Io ad esempio prima di installare, la pulisco sempre con il gestore delle partizioni (che trovi quando parte da cd nel menu - applications - sistema - gestore partizioni -)
Oppure potrebbe essere un problema di masterizzaione... Dubito però che tu possa aver fatto altri errori, visto che fino a quel momento l'unica cosa cui devi stare attento è al passaggio del partizionamento in fase di avvio installazione e a dirgli di installare il GRUB su hd1... se trovo qualche guida in giro o problemi simili te lo linko... Di più al momento non so che dirti.

Ti chiedo se sai indicarmi come poter lavorare con lo schermo chiuso anche con Xandros. Io non sono riusciuto a trovare nessun menù o funzionalità per poterlo fare. Esiste una modalità terminale anche in Xandros fornito con l'asus, magari per inserire l'istruzione tramite riga di comando?

Si può avviare l'EEEPC ad una data ed un orario pre impostato? Se si, sai indicarmi come? Tramite bios, rete (ping o qualcosa di simile), ...
So che su alcuni PC fissi è possibile farlo tramite BIOS.

Allora non conosco Xandros, l'ho usato giusto un paio di giorni prima di passare a Xubuntu. Il terminale però so che lo apri con una combinazione di tasti, mi sembra fosse ctrl + alt + t. Per il resto quindi ti rimanderei ai numerosissimi forum online... giusto ieri ho letto qualcosa sul'accensione programmata e bios, ma non ricordo dove... Se ci ricapito sopra facio l'upgrade. Comunque tornando a Xandros, molte delle opzioni e potenzialità di quel sistema sono sfruttabili solo dall'interfaccia desktop. Che puoi ottenere attraverso l'upgrade del sistema... leggi qui:
